Fairmeadow Community Update 8.20.21

Greetings Fairmeadow Community!

Congratulations to all of us for completing our very first full week of the 2021-22 school year. It's been absolutely a joy to be with all our Firebirds. Seeing students in action and hearing all of their laughter and conversations in and out of the classroom fills our campus with so much excitement. With the new school year upon us, I'd like to remind us all to be extra vigilant of our students and families as they arrive to and from school. Please stay off your cell phones and drive slowly. This would actually be a great time to walk, bike, or scooter to help lessen the vehicle congestion. I've also been in communication with Palo Alto police department regarding traffic control and crossing guard positions to make sure they support our school sites. You can also visit the SRTS Walk and Roll Map website and email with questions: at SafeRoutes@CityofPaloAlto.org. To report any overgrown bushes, debris on the roadway, or other obstructions that might impact student school commutes, please visit the Palo Alto 311 webpage.

Air Quality- PAUSD refers to, and follows, School Air Quality Activity Recommendations and uses the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) website, AirNow.gov, to monitor air quality. I am in regular communication with the District staff especially when air quality is poor or questionable. Currently, (Friday, August 20th), the air quality index is at moderate level and is projected to stay that way throughout the day. You can also check our district's website for the most up-to-date guidance's around air quality: https://www.pausd.org/return-to-campus/air-quality-protocols. All sites will be instructed if and when we need to keep our students indoors.

COVID Safety Protocols Update- Beginning on Monday, August 23, all students and staff MUST wear a face mask while OUTDOORS (in addition to indoors). Our staff, especially our yard duty supervisors will remind our students beginning on Monday when students are playing outdoors. Please also refer to Don Austin's community update from this afternoon.

Health and Wellness- Thank you so much for keeping the lines of communication open and honest with our front office staff and your child's teacher about your child's health. Many parents/guardians have been emailing, calling and making sure to notify us when their child(ren) is feeling ill. Please remember to keep your child(ren) home if they are not feeling well, and especially if they have a fever. When you notify the school, we will help guide you with next steps and let you know when your child can return back to class. Thank you for keeping all of our children and staff healthy!

New Staff Members- We have some new faces joining our Firebird family this year. Rachel Kim, room 1, joins our first-grade team. Rachel recently worked at Barron Park and Greendell (full year distance learning program) as an EL Specialist, and prior to that, she worked with underserved communities in East San Jose in the Charter School setting. Also new to Fairmeadow but not new to PAUSD is Lara Jarvis, who is in room 10. Lara is a part of our third-grade team, which also happens to be our only grade level this year with four classes (all other grade levels are a three-strand). This past school year, Lara worked at Greendell, but ultimately spent most of her tenure at Barron Park where she taught a variety of grades, but her niche is 3rd grade. Lara has a colorful teaching background filled with private and public schools in the East Bay, Peninsula, and Los Angeles. Victor Gutierrez is also part of our third-grade team and is in room 9. Victor comes to us with 12 years of teaching experience, most recently, Victor taught 3rd grade at a dual immersion school in San Jose. We also have Sharon Fekete, joining our ELL (English Language Learner) team, Diane Saunders and Allison Mullins, joining our PE team, Aleksandra Dudukovic, joining our Spectra Art team, as well as the following classroom aides: Melissa Estremera and Soumaya Arfi (Kindergarten aides), Rosa Alcala (1st grade aide), Patrick Vargas (5th grade aide). We are still in need of a few more aides in the classroom. If you are interested, please reach out to me! I know you will all join me in giving our newest Firebird staff a warm welcome.

Parent Volunteers- All school volunteers must be fully-vaccinated in order to volunteer on campus. Volunteers must also check in/out of the front office prior to entering a classroom or school site and complete a quick vaccination survey. For now, we are focused on gathering vaccination status so volunteers can support our school.

  1. Only vaccinated volunteers should complete the form (item three below). If a person is not vaccinated, they are not eligible to volunteer.
  2. An image or photo of their vaccination card must be submitted.
  3. Visit this link to submit proof of vaccination: Volunteer Vaccination Status Form
  4. A confirmation email will be sent after submission.

Counseling Corner- I am excited to announce we will continue to share information, resources, and tips about how to support your child's mental health. Our wonderful school psychologist, Andrea Saxerud, will start Counseling Corner once a month beginning on September 3rd.

Back to School Night (BTSN)- is on Tuesday, August 31st. Please mark your calendars and join me on Zoom (link to be sent shortly) for my Back to School Night Welcome presentation starting promptly at 5:00 pm. Afterwards, you will log in to your child's teacher's Zoom link, which will be provided to you shortly. At 5:30-6:00 pm, grades 3-5 will have their Zoom BTSN and at 6:05-6:35 pm, grades K-2 will have their Zoom BTSN. These sessions will not be recorded, however, teachers may share their slideshow/presentation.

I wish you all a fabulous Friday and please remember to have your child(ren) bring a snack, water bottle (with student name), and face mask daily!
