Fairmeadow Elementary Updates 11.19.21

Greetings Fairmeadow Families,

We are officially on Thanksgiving Break! During the following week, I truly hope you are able to unwind and spend some quality time with family and loved ones. A very Happy Hanukkah (Nov. 26-Dec. 6th) to families who celebrate this wonderful holiday as well. This is a great time of year for us all to reflect and practice gratitude, and I am so thankful for being a part of the Fairmeadow family and community. We truly do have a special school that is filled with joy and love each day. I am grateful for the collaboration and communication between our families and school site. Please continue to reach out and do not hesitate to reach out to me if you need additional supports throughout the year; we are a team!

Here are some updates:

Progress Reports- Your child(s) progress is now available! Please click here for instructions on how to access your child's report. Please note, our teachers and staff are on Thanksgiving break, so please hold off on questions about the Progress Report until after we get back from the much-needed Thanksgiving break.

Pediatric COVID Vaccinations- As previously mentioned by Dr. Don Austin, PAUSD will be providing COVID-19 vaccinations for children ages 5-11 years old this coming Sunday, 11/21. We are partnering with Safeway Pharmacy to provide Pfizer COVID vaccinations for our families with children in that age range. Please use the link below if interested. First dose vaccinations will be administered at Palo Alto High School on Sunday, November 21. The spots may fill up quickly so sign-up today! Click here. I've also attached a flyer for more information.

Covid Clinic Updates- Covid Clinic has officially moved over its programming to not require an ordered test each week. New families (families who've never had their child tested on-site with Covid Clinic), will need to place one initial order, but for all future testing, students who already registered once, will be able to walk up to the Covid Clinic table and get tested. The instructions on our PAUSD website will reflect this new information. For next week, Covid Clinic will keep Cubberley open all 5 days for covid testing needs. Should you have someone needing covid testing next week, Cubberley will remain an option Monday to Friday from 10 am to 6 pm.

Gratitude- A huge shout out to Bethwyn Morris, our Garden Parent Lead, and Mrs. Easton, for continuing to beautify and support our garden. Thank you to all of our parents who volunteered in the garden this term. Our kids truly have a blast and enjoy going to Garden Club every Friday!

  • We planted beets, salad greens, peas, kale, chard, carrots and wild flowers;
  • We tasted apples, persimmon, cucumbers, tomatoes and pumpkin;
  • We created pebble bugs, leaf art, water colors and bug habitats, and most importantly
  • We've learned about how plants grow, what butterflies need to live, how to look after a garden, work in a team, and take care of the earth!

Service to Others- Our very own Student Council members and lead teachers, Ms. Choy, Mrs. Pounders, and Mrs. Van, would like to invite Fairmeadow Families to support Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley this holiday season. Each classroom will be collecting monetary donations until Wednesday, December 15th which will help provide meals to families in need. Please see this flyer (and attached) for more information. Thank you all for supporting this very important cause. For families or staff members who would prefer to submit a credit card donation, here is Fairmeadow's direct online fundraising link: https://impact.shfb.org/team/390695. This link is also provided in the information flyer attached.

Service to Others- You may or may not be aware of our partnership with SVBE (Silicon Valley Bike Exchange) student donations program. Through this cool program, we were able to provide bikes, helmets, locks, and lights to Fairmeadow students in need. We hope to continue this partnership with this program, and are seeking help and support from our wonderful Fairmeadow community! For more information about SVBE, click here.

The community can support us in three ways:

  1. Make a monetary donation through our site. Each bike we repair takes about $50 in labor and parts.
  2. Donate bicycles in good conditions through our donations page. These can potentially end up as donated bikes for future students.
  3. Purchase a refurbished bike, new parts, or accessories through our store. All proceeds go back into the organization.

Thank you for partnering with us and our Bike Match program. It means the world to us to help out students/families in need, and we appreciate your help. Together, we can help improve and support our Firebird community!

PiE Winners- Thank you to all of our fabulous PiE donor families who gave last week and doubled donations through our generous challenge grant!

In honor doubling donations, we've also DOUBLED the number of word search kids who were picked from our random drawing to RECEIVE A FREE PIE (yummy)!

The winners of (real) pies are:

  • Karina T., Room 21
  • Olivia Y., Room 8
  • Oskar V., Room 3
  • Daniel K., Room 12

All four winners will be contacted to arrange delivery of your pies from Heather Gaillard, our PiE Representative. Thank you, Heather, for coordinating this opportunity for our Firebirds!

The Kindness Challenge- I am excited to announce that Fairmeadow will be participating in the Kindness Challenge in January so we can continue to focus on student well-being. The Great Kindness Challenge is a free program for educators looking to celebrate kindness in their school and improve school culture. Our students will receive a checklist with acts of kindness to complete during a designated week (January 24-28, 2022), where the event takes place all across the country. For more info about this wonderful opportunity for our students, please see: https://thegreatkindnesschallenge.com/

Ruby Bridges- Thank you to Mari Ueda-Tao, one of our parent volunteer extraordinaire for organizing the 1st Annual Ruby Bridges' Walk To School Day on Wednesday, November 17th. What a perfect opportunity to teach children about the civil rights movement and make connections to today's collective efforts for change as you walk to school! I've attached a fun photo for you!

That's all for now. I wish each and every one of you a very Happy and Loving Thanksgiving Break next week. We will see you on Monday, November 29th!

Be well,

Iris Wong, Fairmeadow Principal
