Fairmeadow Elementary Updates 9.17.21

Hello Fabulous Fairmeadow Community!

What a beautiful day to end a very busy week here at Fairmeadow. This week our librarian, Michelle Brown, worked with 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes by highlighting the Pura Belpre Book Award which is awarded annually to Latinx authors and illustrators who celebrate the Latino culture in children's literature. There were also two picture books that were inspired by Latin female musicians, Drum Dream Girl and Dancing Hands both by Margarita Engle and Rafeal Lopez. If you have a 3-5th grader, please ask them about these Lantinx authors and Mexican Independence Day! In addition to honoring and completing activities centered around Mexican Independence Day (Sept. 16th), some classrooms also discussed the Jewish holiday and New Year, Rosh Hashanah (began on Sept. 6th) and Yom Kippur (began on Sept. 15th) and in the last couple weeks. Classrooms were filled with activities and read aloud's that focused on the traditions of these two cultures.

Today was picture day, and it was so awesome to see all our Firebirds looking extra sharp and picture ready. During my yard duty this morning, a student enthusiastically said, "Good morning Mrs. Wong! I am dressed in my BEST outfit today because I found a red shirt with a collar for picture day!" It was such a delight to see the joy and pride in this Firebird's eyes. If your child missed picture day today, do not worry; there will be a make-up picture day on October 28th. Here are some updates for this week:

Parenting Support Series- AACI will be continuing their parenting support group/workshop this year! Lynne Li, AACI therapist at Greene, Fletcher, and Gunn, will be the therapist to lead this 10-week transformative space and workshop for our parents. These sessions will be run in Mandarin and there is a translation for the advertisement to families attached! All parents who are interested in learning more about this workshop and are interested in attending, please review the attached flyer and/or Eventbrite link here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/172923929127

Shakeout Contest- PAUSD is working with the City of Palo Alto Office of Emergency Services, and the City Manager's Office on a city-wide program/contest that deals with earthquake preparedness. Shakeout is an annual event in honor of all those who experienced the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, and it is an international event with over 23 countries participating with the US. Although we have been focused on the pandemic, drought, wildfires, smoke, and heat, we are still at risk for earthquakes. Thus annually, we drill - Drop, Cover, and Hold. Locally we are planning a photo/video contest with prizes and a category for youth and another for adults - to acknowledge Shakeout. It should be a lot of fun! This contest is just in time as September is National Preparedness Month. Please see attached for more info.

Buddy Bench- Our Buddy Bench for our 1st through 5th-grade students has been fully implemented, and it's been wonderful seeing students introduce themselves to others then inviting them to play. I've attached a photo of our Buddy Bench so you can see what it looks like. Thank you to families who've shared stories with me and/or your teacher about the Buddy Bench and how your child utilized the bench.

5th Grade Parents- Please review a Parent Square message that was sent to you around 11:35 am today regarding the California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS), which our 5th grade teachers will be administering to their students in October with your permission. As noted in the email, the purpose of this survey is to inform sites of their school safety and overall learning environment. In addition, this survey is anonymous and no names are recorded or attached to the survey. 5th-grade students, with your permission, who agree to participate do not have to answer questions they do not feel comfortable answering. If you have additional questions about CHKS, please feel free to contact Lulu Skafi, our district social worker, at lskafi@pausd.org.

Thank You PTA- Given we are unable to host our Back-to-School-Social gathering this year, PTA has generously opted to provide a Back-to-School gift to our students in lieu of this. Kinders will receive the Fairmeadow Teddy Bear with a welcome to Fairmeadow tag. Grades 1-5 will receive a plastic pocket folder with a pencil, inspirational quote card, and candy. Thank you again PTA-you rock!

Have a wonderful weekend. Let's hope we get some rain tomorrow!

Be well,
Iris Wong, Fairmeadow Principal
