Fairmeadow Updates 4.29.2022
Hello Fairmeadow Community~
What a fabulous week we've had here at Fairmeadow! We started with the Spring Scholastic Book Fair and SBAC testing (3-5th graders), followed by a band performance and Decade Day today. I hope you had a chance to stop by our wonderful Book Fair this week. Our fabulous parent coordinator, Soumaya A., did such an amazing job with the setup and coordination. Thank you to all parent volunteers who've also helped to make this event possible for our Firebirds! A special shout out to our traveling band teachers, Keith Hunter, Shawn McGinn, and Gary Ortega and all our 5th-grade students for putting on a fabulous band concert over at JLS on Tuesday evening. It was such a joy to see our Firebirds performing with such confidence and pride in front of a large audience. It was a fun evening indeed (I've attached a photo). We also ended this event-filled week with a student council Spirit Day of Decade Day today! I've attached a fun photo of some staff members (Mrs. Jarvis and Mrs. Markevitch) dressing up and having some fun!
Please continue reading for some information about the upcoming week!
Mental Health Month- Did you know that the month of May is Mental Health Awareness Month? Our incredible psychologist, Andrea Saxerud, has organized an abundance of resources and activities for the entire month of May. Please be on the lookout for her upcoming newsletters!
Palo Alto Puzzle Hunt- On May 7th, the kick-off of the Palo Alto Puzzle Hunt begins. This is a fun-filled activity for families and friends of all ages. Please see attached flyer for more information.
Staff and Teacher Appreciation- The week of May 2nd begins a celebration of all Fairmeadow Staff for Staff and Teacher Appreciation Week! A huge shout-out goes out to PTA for helping to coordinate a luncheon for staff on Wednesday.
Go Green!- Just because Earth Day is over, let's all continue to be GREEN and make eco-conscious decisions for our beautiful planet. The students who participated in the Flip the Switch Challenge received an Earth Day bookmark, seeds, and popsicles last week. Our Earth Day parent extraordinaire, Anu R. helped to create a short video clip. Every day should be Earth Day! Only people with the following link can see the video: https://youtube.com/shorts/4obfYfObEJE
Universal Free School Meals- As mentioned in Dr. Austin's weekly update, California has become the first state to pass a universal free school meals program for all public school students. PAUSD will continue to provide two free meals (breakfast and lunch) during each school day to students requesting a meal, regardless of students' free or reduced-price meal eligibility starting in the 2022-23 school year.
Although all students may receive free meals without applying, we strongly encourage parents to apply as completion of these forms may bring significant additional funds to our schools, as well as, qualify students for individual benefits such as discounts and/or waivers of the college application fees, AP testing fees, internet services, summer programs, access to higher education scholarships, after-school club scholarships, holiday gifts, and many other learning and enrichment opportunities. You or your children do not have to be United States citizens to qualify. Apply online at paloalto.familyportal.cloud or return a completed application form (available at all school sites and at pausd.org in English and Spanish) to Food Services, 25 Churchill Ave., Palo Alto CA 94306.
PAUSD has been offering free meals to all students for the past two years regardless of their free or reduced-price meal eligibility because, due to COVID-19, in March 2020, USDA established a waiver to allow school districts to offer free meals to all students. However, that waiver will expire on June 30, 2022. Unfortunately, universal free meals will not start until the first day of the school year 2022-23. If your student(s) will be attending summer school, and are not presently on the free lunch program but they would like free meals during summer school, please submit an application for evaluation. These benefits are only good for the current school year, parents will need to submit a new application for the 2022-23 school year. Applications for the 2022-23 school year will be accepted after July 1, 2022.
Thank you for reading! Have a wonderful weekend, and I will see you next week.
